Happy New Year 2006!

Greetings all and Happy New Year! I just watched the big ball drop and so, of course, I couldn't help but wonder about many things. Like, for example, why the heck do we drop a big ball to celebrate a new year? When is it really the new year, since its already past midnight in a number of places in the world? Where is the first place to turn 2006? Is our calendar completely arbitrary? And, of course, what in the heck are the words to that "Auld Lang Syne" song??

Well, I listened really closely to the words this year just so that I could pass them on to you. You don't have to thank me, really. Without further ado, here they are:

Should mold in places we forgot,
and ever wrought with grime!
Should mold in places we forgot,
and days of auld lang syne.

Now, I know this doesn't really make any sense, so I did some research. Apparently the words were written by a Scotsman, who was probably drunk, which explains a lot. Also, it is a little known fact that "auld lang syne" is a common Scottish household cleaner.

How does this relate to a new year? Your guess is as good as mine.

Have a Happy New Year, my friends.

This is a brief message to inform you that you are a pansy. Yes, I said it and I will not retract it. There is a reason why I, an anonymous person, chose to come out say it like it is.... and that is because you are passing up on one of the most wonderful opportunities of your life. I am aware that there is a certain young female who is very attracted to you both physically and psychologically. This young lady is phenomenal on so many levels- she is drop dead gorgeous, terribly cute, has a great sense of humor, she is smart, kind and creative. She has many admirers, but she still admires YOU.
Is this admiration a secret? Not hardly. She has made it clear on a number of occassions that she would like to date you. Despite all of her desirable qualities you ignore her. So Matt... are you going to let the most amazing girl get away without so much as a date?! If your answer is no... reply back on your board and I will kindly give you the number of another applicant on your dating list. This person is also great, but lives in Florida and goes by the name Carlos. He's great. You two should be very happy together.
ASK HER OUT YOU IDIOT!!!!

Well, "anonymous person," I certainly appreciate your concern for the well-being and happiness of your friends . I regret to inform you that, whoever you are and however well you think you know me, you clearly do not understand me or my situation and cannot therefore judge why I might or might not do something that you think I should do. I am handling the situation to the best of my abilities given the situation that I find myself in.

The Only Thing We Have to Fear...

It's October, which means not only do I get to start dipping into my nifty fall wardrobe but also that Halloween is upon us. I think its great that we devote specific holidays to various basic emotions of the human psyche. Halloween = fear, Valentine's day = love, Thanksgiving = gratitude, St. Patrick's Day = envy, and Christmas = greed. We're just missing wrath, lust, pride, sloth, gluttony, and inadequecy. Clearly, more holidays are necessary. But that's a subject for another day. We don't want to give Halloween less than its due. Because seriously, how cool is Halloween? Its way off the scale on the cool-o-meter. When else can you see even the most pious and sensible people indulging in a little of the supernatural and occult by dressing up their children as vampires, witches, or ghosts? Well, that's how it was back in my day anyway (which was soooooo long ago), but today kids dress up as Jedi, princesses, Harry Potter, or Spiderman. They are totally miss...

Telephonophobia

I'm afraid of telephones. Let me clarify: I’m not particularly afraid of the actual physical devices themselves, but of having to use them. It’s been like that as long as I can remember. I get this knot in my stomach every time a phone rings, even if its not my phone or somebody else answers it. I can't stand to pick up the phone, or have a conversation on it for longer than five minutes, and don't even ask me to call somebody I don't know or haven't called before. I can’t, I freeze up. My friends and acquaintances are confused to learn that, despite the fact that I can talk your ear off if we are having a conversation in person, I’m generally monosyllabic on the phone and have to be coaxed to talk at any length. So the phone and I have a troubled relationship, but that hasn’t stopped it from creeping up into all aspects of my life, no matter where I go. In high school there was even a phone in my bedroom, though I never used it. It was connected to the ph...
